Pieces that accompany us through the years
While in my first training in Vufflens-le-Château (VD) in 2001, a friend offered me a fleece-jacket, pitying me for working out in the windy cold while looking after wine in some outdoor tanks. A gentle neighbor pitied me as well and offered me two pairs of wool socks she knitted herself, which are still warm and useful on cold winter days.
Ever since, the jacket has been with me for each harvest in every part of the world as early fall can tend to become quickly cool. It has been to Chile, New Zealand and California for working, but of course it has also been to fantastic places like the Machu Pichu in Peru. While working in the US in 2007, I was allowed to keep a pair of heavy, safety-proofed cellar boots. They are indestructible and accompany me still nowadays for cellar work as they are extremely comfy and full of good memories.
I wore the same jacket during the first harvest in our own winery and at numerous strategically important moments: vine planting, first prunings and the completion of numerous vintages.
I usually like wearing nice clothes and I value quality, some pieces of my wardrobe are as old as this jacket. In general, I cherish good quality in life - not only when it’s about fashion but also when it comes to food or appreciating unforgettable moments. I also believe that this defines partly our style of winemaking: it’s the quality we seek, making wine timeless, personal, being a part of us and also part of the consumer – it’s emotional, so we can enjoy it in good company and make wonderful memories. Whether that is today or in twenty years, is up to us.
The jacket has become old, I guess, I should change the elastics to keep wearing.
